Green Stuff Bitz Making

So I just finished a video talking about my scratch built drop pod, and my recently acquired Space Marine Sternguard Veterans.

I wanted to show you a little secret for making things like Combi - Weapons out of green stuff.

You will need 3 things. Green stuff, Vaseline (or cooking oil works too), and the bit that you want to clone.



Making the Mold

1) You need to roll two balls of green stuff. These should be big enough to cover more than half of the weapon (on the flattest side.) Shape the Greenstuff so that it is very roughly a similar shape to the bit, but is slightly bigger. You can even make it a square that is slightly bigger than the bit.

2) The Vaseline stops your bitz from getting stuck to the green stuff. So what you want to do is cover the bit in the Vaseline. (You don't need too much to make this work.)

It also keeps green stuff from sticking together, so make sure you don't mix the greenstuff with Vaseline still on your fingers!

3) Then you press the two pieces of green stuff over the bit to completely cover it. Be sure to press it against the bit to get as much detail as possible. But not too hard, or else it will be too thin to make more pieces from later.

4) Then leave it to dry for at least 5 hours. I usually leave it over night so that it is sure to be as dry as possible.

5) Once it's dry, you can now separate the two pieces of green stuff. They should come apart without too much difficulty. You can take your bit out of it too.

You should now have a mold with which to make more bitz!

Making new Bitz

1) To make more bitz with your new mold, you simply mix a piece of green stuff roughly the same size and shape as the mold (usually you want to give a bit extra to be sure).

2) Lightly cover the inside of the mold with Vaseline.

3) Press the green stuff inside one of the mold pieces.

4) Put the other piece of the mold on. Press the pieces together to press the detail into the green stuff.

5) Leave it to dry for at least 5 hours. Like I said earlier, I like to leave it overnight to be sure.

6) When it's dry, separate the mold from the green stuff bit you just made.

7) You will probably have quite a lot of flash. Carefully take your hobby knife and trim the flash off of the bit. You can also file it if you see fit.

There you have it! Green stuff bitz making! What's the catch? Not much really. The green stuff copy isn't quite as sharp and clear as the original, but otherwise it's great.

GW may not like this, but I'm actually buying MORE of their stuff now that I figured this out. Because bitz aren't a problem, it opens up lots of tactical options. Which means more models sold for them. Can't argue with that.
And if I couldn't do this then I would simply proxy, since I don't play in tournaments anyways.
